New Chandigarh: In a stunning display of talent, Priyansh Arya, a left-handed opener, achieved his first century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during a match against the Chennai Super Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old made history by scoring the fastest century in just 39 balls against the Super Kings, tying with Travis Head for the fourth-fastest century in IPL history. This remarkable feat also marks the second-fastest century by an Indian player in the tournament, following Yusuf Pathan.
Arya's explosive innings of 103 runs off 42 balls included seven fours and nine sixes, showcasing his dominance over the Chennai bowling lineup. Despite wickets falling at the other end, he made a powerful start by hitting a six off Khaleel Ahmed's first delivery and capitalized on a dropped catch on the next ball, scoring 17 runs in the opening over.
Luck was on his side again when he was caught at 79 runs by Mukesh Choudhary, who inadvertently stepped on the boundary, allowing Arya to continue his innings.
He concluded the power-play with a flurry of runs, hitting Ravichandran Ashwin for four and two sixes, and added two more sixes against the seasoned spinner in the 12th over.
Arya celebrated his century in style, smashing three consecutive sixes off Matheesha Pathirana before edging the next ball for a four to reach the three-figure mark. He became the second player to achieve this milestone in the current season, following Ishan Kishan's unbeaten 106 against the Rajasthan Royals.
Priyansh first gained attention when he hit six sixes in an over during the inaugural Delhi Premier League (DPL), where he scored 608 runs in 10 innings with an impressive strike rate of 198.69, including two centuries and four fifties.
With IPL scouts closely monitoring the tournament, Arya's ability to consistently hit sixes caught their eye, leading him to participate in pre-auction trials for all teams before signing with PBKS for ₹3.8 crore.
